Environmental stewardship and Sustainable aquaculture

The Challenge of Food Sustainability

The clock is ticking

In the next 30 years, the world needs to produce more protein than ever before, but current methods come at a cost. Protein production already accounts for 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and natural omega-3 sources are under immense pressure. The United Nations has called for solutions that don’t strain land, water, or marine resources further.

At Blue Harvest, we see mussels and oysters as part of the answer. These incredible shellfish grow without the need for feed or fertilisers, filter and clean the water around them, and offer nutrient-dense, high-quality protein. Our restorative aquaculture practices not only produce delicious seafood but also actively improve marine ecosystems.

Our operations in Jervis Bay Marine Park and Eden harmonise with the natural ecosystem, ensuring minimal ecological impact while producing premium mussels and oysters.

Sustainable Farming Practices

Bivalve aquaculture, like mussels and oysters, is one of the most sustainable farming methods out there. Our shellfish don’t just grow—they work hard, naturally filtering the water and helping to keep ecosystems healthy. Plus, our leases in Jervis Bay make up less than half a percent of the marine park’s total area, and with the bay flushing itself every 24 days, it’s a win-win for the environment and for you.

Why it matters

Basically, our mussels and oysters are like underwater superheroes—cleaning up the water while growing into juicy, delicious seafood. And with such a tiny footprint in Jervis Bay, we’re farming sustainably without hogging the space. You get premium, ocean-fresh shellfish that’s guilt-free and good for the planet.

Environmental Monitoring and Compliance

We don’t just talk about sustainability; we live it. Our Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification isn’t just a shiny badge—it’s proof that we meet strict global standards for environmental care, animal welfare, and food safety. From water quality checks to seabed health surveys, we’re all about keeping things pristine.

Why This Is Good News

We’re the A+ students of aquaculture, making sure our mussels and oysters grow in tip-top conditions. You can enjoy your seafood knowing it’s not just delicious but responsibly farmed with nature in mind. Bonus points for supporting a farm that truly cares!

Community Engagement and Transparency

We love being part of the local community, and we’re big fans of sharing our playground. Our leases are open to recreational fishers and divers, and we actively work with government agencies, community groups, and neighbours to ensure everyone’s on board with what we do.

So… What does this all mean?

We’re not the secretive type. Whether you’re fishing, diving, or just curious, we’re happy to show you what we’re up to. Think of us as the friendly neighbours of the ocean—transparent, welcoming, and always ready to share the love (and the mussels!).

Commitment to Continuous Improvement

At Blue Harvest, standing still isn’t our thing. We’re constantly tweaking, improving, and updating our practices to stay at the cutting edge of sustainability. With the latest science and tech on our side, we’re building a future that’s good for the planet and great for seafood lovers.

The Takeaway

It means we’re always looking for ways to get better—whether it’s growing tastier mussels, protecting marine life, or making aquaculture more sustainable. When you choose Blue Harvest, you’re supporting a farm that’s not just thinking about today but planning for tomorrow.
